Dolphins could still be suitors in Rams' potential Stetson Bennett trade market

The Los Angeles Rams have gone from rags to riches on the quarterback depth chart. Not only have they transformed Stetson Bennett into a speculative trade candidate, rookie Ty Simpson exceeded everyone's expectations. As a result, the Rams may be willing to listen to offers for Bennett; Miami Dolphins, for one, could still give them a call.

Leading up to roster cutdowns, the Dolphins traded for Rams running back Jarquez Hunter, returning wide receiver Tutu Atwell to LA in the process. They also traded quarterback Quinn Ewers to Jacksonville and acquired Kyle McCord from the Packers. Hunter was promptly released before the 53-man roster deadline.

McCord, who has never seen an official snap, is poised to be the No. 2 option behind career backup Malik Willis. The Dolphins may still be in the quarterback market. That remains the case after Miami added former Jets QB Brady Cook to the practice squad. Bennett would be an upgrade over Cook, and possibly on McCord as well.

Rams' Stetson Bennett would be low-risk, high-reward trade target

When assessing any trade target, general managers look for five traits to determine before pursuing negotiations. Those traits include:

Talent - Does the player improve the roster's ceiling?
Fit - Can he fit the role he would play?
Cost - How much will it cost to acquire the player? What's the salary cap impact?
Severability - Can the team escape from a long-term relationship if things don't work out as planned?
Fan appeal - Like it or not, every team keeps ticket and merchandise sales in mind.

Bennett is cheap, talented, a fit for team needs, in the last year of his rookie contract, and should have tremendous gate appeal in the heart of SEC territory. A college superstar, Bennett led nearby Georgia to two national championships

Could the Rams operate with just two quarterbacks - Simpson and Matthew Stafford? Although rookie Matt Caldwell is on injured reserve, he is still with the team.

Meanwhile, luring back veteran Jimmy Garoppolo under the right circumstances remains a possibility. Sean McVay's reluctance to name Bennett as the backup could suggest that the the Rams are open to moving on.

Bennett sat out the third preseason game. Many interpreted that to mean that he had been established as QB2. But it could also hint that other teams have inquired about the former Bulldog's availability.

Teams originally proposed as potential Bennett suitors included the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. Perhaps they've moved on in the wake of roster cutdowns and practice squad signings, but the Dolphins should still be on the list.

Stay tuned. This is a fluid topic that could evolve at any time. Bennett still hasn't won the backup job in Los Angeles, but he could be traded into a QB2 role elsewhere.
