Before the Los Angeles Rams became the house that Sean McVay built, they were one of the more consistent winners of the early 1980s. At the helm for all of those teams was one of the greatest coaches in Rams history in former USC great John Robinson.
Only McVay can claim to have equalled or surpassed what Robinson has done with the Rams after the merger. Unofrtunately, the Rams were handed some sorroful news regarding one of the more influentuial figures in franchise history and the overseer of nearly a decade of consistent winning.
Just a few minutes before their Monday Night Football game against the Miami Dolphins, the Rams announced that Robinson had passed away at 89 years old. When looking back at his career, Robinson's time with the Rams needs to be held in very high regard due to his consistency.

After winning a national championship at USC, Robinson came to the Rams as Ray Malavasi's replacement in 1983. After becoming famous for creating extremely potent running games behind stars like Ricky Bell and Marcus Allen, Robinson kicked the Rams' offense up a notch when he picked Eric Dickerson No. 2 overall in the NFL Draft.
Leaning on backs like Dickerson and Charles White to go along with a stifling defense, Robinson made the playoffs six times in his first seven years as a coach. Twice he made the NFC Championship Game, losing to two all-time great teams in the 1985 Bears and 1989 49ers.
Robinson went 75-68 as a coach with the Rams and 67-44 before 1990. he held the record for most wins by a Rams coach (postseason included) until the 2024 season, when McVay blew past him. Robinson's record for regular season wins will stand for a few more weeks.
Robinson built the Rams into a force during his best years, as their running games helped cut down some of the best teams in football consistently, Out thoughts go out to the Robinson family during what is surely a very tragic time.
