Jay Glazer confirms what Rams fans were thinking about shocking Ty Simpson pick

Los Angeles appears to have a clear vision after throwing everyone for a loop early in the 2026 NFL Draft.

You never know what the Los Angeles Rams are going to do under general manager Les Snead, especially at this time of the offseason. Yet, they still find ways to surprise us, with Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson's shocking arrival being the latest and one of the most glaring examples.

No one — and we mean nobody — expected the Rams to select Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. He wasn't even a lock to be taken in Round 1, let alone be one of the first players off the board. And then there's the Matthew Stafford factor.

Stafford, who turned 38 in February, is firmly entrenched as the Rams' starting signal-caller. Age aside, he's coming off an MVP campaign and showing zero signs of slowing down. The two sides have also reportedly made "significant progress" on a contract extension; when exactly will Simpson get a shot?

In an ideal world, Simpson doesn't see the field anytime soon for the Rams outside of the preseason or victory formation snaps. However, that appears to be the plan, if recent intel from FOX Sports' Jay Glazer is any indication.

Los Angeles informed Stafford of its intention to roll the dice on Simpson before doing so. Moreover, the Rams "made it clear" the latter won't be called upon until the former "decides to move on," per Glazer.

Rams aren't pivoting from Matthew Stafford to Ty Simpson anytime soon despite 2026 NFL Draft surprise

Not that there was any doubt, but Glazer confirms there is no controversy in Los Angeles. Stafford will be the guy until he doesn't want to be; the ball is in his court. The Rams brought in Simpson to be their passer of the future.

The Rams entered the evening with issues to fix on both sides of the ball and chose to make a forward-thinking move. Simpson addresses the club's clear need to eventually replace Stafford, albeit at the expense of their immediate outlook. It’s a strange development for Snead and a Los Angeles squad that’s currently favored to win Super Bowl LXI (h/t FanDuel Sportsbook).

Rams fans probably would've preferred to see the club maximize its current championship window rather than preparing for life after Stafford. Instead, Simpson comes in to sit on the bench and learn for at least one year — and potentially (hopefully) more.
