The Los Angeles Rams made effective use of running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum in 2025. But the overall rushing attack put up more than 2,100 rushing yards. The heavy lifting was done by Williams, but the team did see nine carries from backup runner Ronnie Rivers, resulting in 46 rushing yards.
It must have been enough to impress the team, as Rivers' contract expired at the end of 2025. And yet, Los Angeles has opted to bring him back for another season on a one-year deal. Surprised? You shouldn't be. The team drafted rookie running back Jarquez Hunter in 2025, only to sit him on the bench for the entire season. Rivers, though beginning the season on the practice squad, saw more action.
Rivers fits the mold for LA running backs. He stands 5-foot-9, weighs 198 pounds, and is productive enough when afforded limited carries. He's been with the team since 2022 and has continued to scrape and claw for opportunities to contribute. While he has yet to score an NFL touchdown in the regular season, he has amassed 72 carries for 295 yards.
He's also hauled in 15 receptions for 85 yards. And he has chipped in as a returner for kickoffs.
Ronnie Rivers extension is a great signing
Not every player added to the roster needs to be an All-Pro type. Rivers is a great signing because he fills a necessary role on the LA Rams roster despite not being in the spotlight. RIvers knows the offense and can step onto the field at a moment's notice. Not only can he play his position, but he is productive enough at it.
No fuss. No headaches. He just does his job and is happy to do so.
He's not a big-bodied, burly power rusher. Despite repeated protests from sites and fans, LA appears to have no interest in a power-run game. It's keeping that in mind that makes Rivers' return so important. He is not only what the current offensive philosophy seeks, but he has done enough to stick around for his fifth NFL season.
That's long enough to tie him with Kyren Williams as the longest-tenured running back on the team.
Sure, there are other running backs. But no one knows the offense like Ronnie Rivers. That's worth more than a passing thought. It's worth one more year in Horns.
As always, thanks for reading.
