Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead is crazy like a fox. He traded a small treasure chest of draft picks to the Kansas City Chiefs for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie. But then, before the veteran even reports to Los Angeles for his new team's uniform, he agreed to sign McDuffie to a monstrous four-year extension that will make him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
And he agreed to do so on the cusp of the 2026 NFL Free Agency market's debut.

Isn't this the same team that has multiple extension-worthy players due for a new contract? While the team is not operating under a salary cap deficit, the introduction of a record-setting contract will quickly exhaust the available spending cash the team had earmarked for new players in either free agency or the upcoming draft.
And the adage holds for football as it does in every industry:
No money, no mission.
And yet, Snead is crazy like a fox. How so? It's the NFL way that the first contract signed for any player, whether an extension or free agent, sets the market for that year for all subsequent contracts. And so, Snead and company just raised the bar for any team seeking to sign free agent cornerbacks this year.
Oh boy, their tasks to do so just got far more expensive.
Rams contract with Trent McDuffie just set the market for all FA CBs
Oh, you shrewd master, Les Snead. The LA Rams were deliberate in the timing of this new contract extension for veteran Trent McDuffie. At point-blank range of the NFL free agency market, it will send teams and agents scrambling to reflect the new market value of NFL cornerbacks in their contract language.
And many cornerbacks are actively seeking new contracts this year.
The Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, and even Seattle Seahawks are all teams that are expected to be shopping the free agent market for cornerbacks. But these NFC West Division rivals will be hard-pressed now to find any bargains.
And while they could abandon veterans to draft cornerbacks, those rookie arrivals will need time and patience to gain experience. That also aids LA in its quest to optimize the final years of 38-year-old quarterback Matthew Stafford's career.
Need more proof as to how clever Les Snead can be? Los Angeles risks losing four cornerbacks to other teams due to expiring contracts. But the loss of Ahkello Witherspoon, Cobie Durant, Roger McCreary, and even Derion Kendrick could trigger the algorithm used to award compensatory picks in the 2027 NFL Draft.
By raising the market price of cornerbacks, Snead has directly influenced the likelihood that one or more cornerbacks could result in compensatory picks for LA in the 2027 NFL draft.

Now, that's inspired.
The Horns were always planning to invest in McDuffie's extension. Otherwise, Snead would never have made a trade to send four draft picks, including the 29th overall selection, to the Chiefs for McDuffie. But the timing of this new extension was superb.
It's just one more reason for fans to love Les Snead.
As always, thanks for reading.
