Many view Sean McVay's post-draft body language as unhappiness over the pick

Sean McVay was not his usual happy, glib self. Is he already frustrated with Ty Simpson pick?

The Los Angeles Rams may have selected a future franchise quarterback in Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Still, the selection of Simpson with the 13th overall pick seemed like an overreach to ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper. And if you tuned into the post-draft press conference with general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay, you could hardly tell if it was Day 1 of the NFL draft or a funeral.

And some fans, and many casual analysts, have pointed to Sean McVay's demeanor in the presser as an indication that he is frustrated over the pick. There were no laughs. There were no expletive deletions. And there was little expression of how fantastically Simpson's potential upside fits in this offense. It's was calm, cool, and collected.

And it was all about the work ahead.

If there was a true need in this draft, a franchise quarterback of the future was it. And yet, it's not a sexy pick. It's not a pick that fans can rally behind. Everyone knows that the earliest Simpson will see the football field is 2027. Many hope that Stafford's career will extend, keeping the rookie on the bench for the duration of his entire rookie contract.

Still, an empty quarterback room next season is impossible to ignore.

Rams finally draft a future franchise quarterback

The LA Rams have been hunting for an opportunity to draft a future franchise quarterback. When the team selected Georgia superhero quarterback Stetson Bennett, the team was interested in adding a depth quarterback who could surprise. But in selecting Ty Simpson with the first-round pick, the statement made is obvious.

Simpson is the heir apparent. Or, is he?

Judge for yourself. This is the LA Rams post-draft conference from Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft. Notice how McVay spouts out a geyser of informational and complimentary statements.

Now compare that to the mood of the room in the post-draft conference from Day 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft. McVay is curt. He doesn't use his hands. His facial expressions are not happy. McVay grimaces rather than smiles. Yes, there is a distinct message there.

But are fans and analysts overreacting? Perhaps. It's human nature to project our emotions onto others. If you've ever gotten a text message or DM when angry, you know exactly what that's like.

Despite some fans' protests, it was very unlikely that any Round 1 rookie could crack this roster in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. Not everyone is happy about Simpson's selection. But as you will soon see, there is a growing consensus among NFL experts who love Simpson's fit.

As always, thanks for reading.
