Many NFL analysts and even some Los Angeles Rams fans have focused on the need for a star third receiver to boost the room's production. But last year's top-scoring offense already had an ace in the hole. If Davante Adams improves his atypically subpar catch rate, the offense will benefit significantly along with him.

Adams was not alone. Rookies Konata Mumpfield and Terrance Ferguson suffered the same fate. Converting their targets more often could have a major impact this season. Well, evidence from training camp and both the Rams' joint practices is in, and all three pass-catchers are in excellent rhythm.

The passing offense will get an upgrade in that alone. Even navigating the preseason without Puka Nacua due to injury, the offense has regrouped and looks stronger than ever.

And fans can thank 'science.' After all, Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams have discovered a new chemistry.

Refined Stafford-Adams connection will lead boost Rams pass attack

Adams and Stafford had mixed results in their first season of esprit de corps. Adams was Mr. Automatic in the red zone last year. But he struggled to find the handle on Stafford's passes, taking until midseason to exceed a 50 percent catch rate.

That's certainly a new wrinkle. Stafford has a reputation for throwing the NFL's most catchable pass. And a veteran receiver like Adams is the last person fans expected to struggle.

But when Adams arrived in Los Angeles, Stafford's back injury prevented him from connecting with new receivers in training camp. It was only days before the first kickoff that Stafford managed to suit up for practice. That absence impeded early chemistry between Stafford and his newly arrived teammates.

Stafford remained healthy throughout the offseason. Adams, Mumpfield, and Ferguson have crafted strong connections with their quarterback. The Cowboys saw it in last week's joint practice. The Saints saw it. And when the regular season starts, Rams fans will see it too, on top of the training-camp highlights they already have.

As always, thanks for reading.
