Sometimes losing is a good thing. At least, that's what Los Angeles Rams fans hope, especially after dropping what appeared to be a surefire Week 3 win against the Philadelphia Eagles. Even still, it's time to move on. And after a second-half meltdown, there are plenty of items to be coached up for Week 4 when the Indianapolis Colts come to town.

One of the best indicators of an analyst's reactions to a loss is how the team shows up in the next week's power rankings. While nobody considers subjective power rankings as the gold standard, they can be helpful with level-setting expectations.

Teams that move into the top half of these lists are perceived as ascending, while those in the lower half are viewed as struggling.

The Rams rose to sixth in Pro Football Talk's latest power ranking after their catastrophic loss to Philly. Meanwhile, they remained firmly entrenched in eighth place in NFL Spin Zone's latest power ranking, per Lou Scataglia. Not to be outdone, Fox Sports continued to include them in the top 10 as well.

What do power rankings mean for Rams entering Week 4?

While power rankings are inherently subjective, they can still help fans form a broader consensus about where a team stands early in the season. And in the spirit of “you can’t fool all of the people all of the time,” showing up consistently among the league’s top teams in Week 3 offers at least some sliver of certainty in otherwise uncertain times.

LA has been a difficult team to judge so far. Clearly powered by a stingy defense, it has been a bit of a roller coaster ride through three weeks, especially in the health department. The injuries to cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon and left guard Steve Avila appear to be significant. Even the inconsistent durability of right guard Kevin Dotson has created inconsistent play.

A 2-1 record to begin the season is great, no matter how you slice it. And while it’s wise not to get too carried away, compared to recent years, this start carries a similar aura to the 2021 campaign that ended with a Super Bowl LVI win at SoFi Stadium. But, as is often the case, these early wins and losses haven’t come without their share of questions and concerns.

As the team pivots and readies to face a tough Indy squad, fans are left to their own devices to determine whether a win is likely or not. For the time being, success seems to be the more likely outcome. Let's hope it stays that way. As always, thanks for reading.
