It's no secret that Matthew Stafford has been dealing with injuries. Considering what a massive piece of the Los Angeles Rams' offense he is, the team needs to ensure that if Stafford isn't good to go at any point this season, they have a quarterback room that's up to the task of keeping the team afloat.
Jimmy Garoppolo is Stafford's backup, and he's a reliable backup. The problem is that Garoppolo is also quite injury-prone, and if he goes down, then it'd be former National Champion Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett stepping onto the stage for the first time in his pro career.
While it'd be a cool story to see Bennett step into a starting role and flourish, the chances of that happening are slim. This is why the Rams need to strongly consider swinging a trade for current Giants quarterback Jameis Winston, who would be a solid QB3 for the Rams in the 2025 season.
Rams should contemplate trading for Jameis Winston
Winston might not be a reliable starting quarterback each and every week but he's a great spot starter. The former number one overall pick by the Bucs in 2015 has made a new career for himself as a backup and whenever he's been called upon, he makes things entertaining. In seven starts with the Browns a season ago, Winston threw 13 touchdowns. Of course, he also threw 12 interceptions and that's simply how it goes with Winston as your quarterback.
With the Giants likely having Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart ahead of Winston on the depth chart, the former top pick in the draft could be on the trade block, and the Rams shouldn't hesitate to add him if that opportunity arises. This team is talented enough to win a Super Bowl, and so much of that rides on Stafford's health.
If Stafford has to miss time during the regular season and Garoppolo then comes in and also gets injured, Winston could be the difference between the Rams winning the division or having to be a wild card team. Los Angeles probably wouldn't have to part with anything more than a sixth-round pick to acquire Winston and there's no doubt he'd give them the quarterback depth they need.
It might seem like a strange idea for a team with an already solid backup in Garoppolo but considering his own injury concerns, this could end up being the move that makes a massive difference for a Super Bowl contending team.
