The Los Angeles Rams have quite the competitor under center in veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. And the Detroit Lions, the Rams Week 1 opponent, know that first hand. After all, it was Matthew Stafford who reentered a game with a dislocated shoulder in the closing seconds to win a game for the Lions with a game-winning touchdown as time ran out.
It is the stuff that legends are made of.
It's no secret that Matthew Stafford has been grateful and respectful of the Detroit Lions since being traded to the LA Rams. And it was that respect and gratitude that accompanied Stafford to the Wild Card Round of the 2024 NFL Playoffs to face his former team. That, and his family, that is.
But whatever debt that Matthew Stafford and his family owed to the city of Detroit, Michigan, and the Detroit Lions football team, was paid in full when a few fans jeered and booed Stafford's daughters. While booing players on the football field is fair game, harassing his children made this Week 1 contest a bit more . . . personal for Matthew Stafford.
And that's saying a lot for a guy as ultra-competitive as Matthew Stafford has proven to be time and time again. In simpler teams, I believe that since discovering the treatment of his family in Ford Field last season's playoff game, he has circled the date on the calendar and is saving something quite special for his former team:
You may view the Rams team as road underdogs. That is certainly understandable with a growing list of players on the IR list before the team even gets one snap in a football game on the books. But this is Matthew Stafford that we are talking about. And he will be throwing to both WRs Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua.
Since joining the Rams, he has opened the NFL season with:
- 2021 - vs Bears | 20 for 26 | 321 yards | 3 TDs | 0 INTs
- 2022 - vs Bills | 29 for 41 | 240 yards | 1 TD | 3 INTs
- 2023 - @ Seahawks | 24 of 38 | 334 yards | 0 TDs | 0 INTs
- 2024 - @ Lions | ???
In his three season opener with the Rams, Stafford has averaged 302 yards, 1.3 TDs and 1 INT per game. For this one, I project Stafford releasing the Kraken, putting up 30 of 40 passes for 350+ yards, 2 TDs and 0 INTs.
How do you see Stafford performing in Week 1? Stay tuned, as we will find out very soon.
And as always, thanks for reading.
