II: Rams have not lost confidence in Bennett

MSN.com Crissy Froyd had an article about LA Rams QB Stetson Bennett recently that cited a bit of recent praise by the team for the work ethic and effort that the second-year quarterback is making. But her article is based on the pre-draft video conference held by Coach McVay and GM Les Snead (see Slide 1) and addresses Bennett at the 31:00 minute mark.

"He (Stetson Bennett) has done a great job being engaged in the meetings. We have had a lot of individual meetings up to this point. I know (Quarterbacks Coach) Dave Ragone has really enjoyed his interaction with him throughout the first six days, if you will, with Monday through Thursday last week, and then now being through two days this week and so far it has been good."

The Rams know the value of good coaching. They have learned those lessons through trial and error. But lessons learned are the building blocks of champions, and the team has certainly leveraged those errors in trial and error efforts to succeed in future endeavors. One of the aspects that the team can take great pride in is the way that the team handled the onboarding of veteran QB Baker Mayfield in 2022 and then the onboarding of veteran QB Carson Wentz in 2023.

So why not pivot the 2024 coaching staff towards specializing in rookie QB development? When the team's two young wide receivers in Tutu Atwell and Jacob Harris needed a jumpstart, the team brought in OC Liam Coen to oversee getting both players engaged in the 2022 offense. Tutu Atwell showed progress, but Jacob Harris did not.

The Rams knew long before Stetson Bennett arrived for OTAs that the team would need to invest heavily in quarterback development on the coaching staff. And so, the team hired:

  2. Dave Ragone | QB Coach | Story Link
  3. Nate Scheelhaase | Offensive Assistant, Pass Game Specialist | Story Link
  4. Jerry Schuplinski | Senior Offensive Assistant | Story Link

Stetson Bennett is not alone in this journey in 2024. Both he and teammate QB Dresser Winn have some of the most accomplished coaches in the NFL in terms of quarterback development. What does that mean for 2024?
