Promising Seahawks edge rusher plans to join Rams practice squad

The Los Angeles Rams have finalized their initial 53-man roster and practice squad. But as often happens, pending additions to a practice squad roster can be tweaked rather quickly to satisfy adequate depth at key positions.

In that context, the report that former Seattle Seahawks edge rusher Jamie Sheriff plans to sign with the Rams is par for the course:

The news has yet to be confirmed by the team. That could simply be delayed by the need to create an open spot on the practice squad for Sheriff. The Rams had already signed undrafted rookie Darryl Peterson III; perhaps Peterson did not work out, or LA simply felt the need to add edge-rusher depth, at the expense of another player's slot.

That would be somewhat curious, though, given Wesley Bailey's surprising inclusion on the 53-man roster, as the only undrafted rookie to make the team. With Bailey as a fifth rostered edge rusher and Peterson on the practice squad, the position seems adequately stocked for the rigors of the season.

Jamie Sheriff could find a home on Rams practice squad

After landing former Rams linebacker Ernest Jones and luring 2025 Rams rookie Chris 'Pooh' Paul Jr. to the practice squad, the Seahawks now face losing a promising young edge rusher to their NFC West rival.

Team expert Lee Vowell shared this spot-on assessment of Sheriff:

"(Jamie) Sheriff is a solid player but just had no path to playing the Seahawks. Really good burst and solid pass rusher. If he got the chance to play, especially in the Rams' system, he could probably be quite productive."

While getting a chance to play this season also seems remote for an edge rusher on LA's practice squad, having a bird's-eye view of Myles Garrett in action is bound to fast-track any young player's learning curve.

Originally signed by the Carolina Panthers in 2024, the 6-foot-1, 254-pound Sheriff has been a staple on the Seahawks' practice squad for the past two seasons. He has been exclusively used as a special teamer in Seattle, appearing in two games and recording one tackle.

If he does sign with Los Angeles, he would likely serve a similar role in 2026, if elevated to the active roster. But with so many veterans in the final year of their contracts, Sheriff is certainly someone to watch. With nine days until the season opener, there's still time for both the 53-man unit and the practice squad to shake themselves out.
