The Los Angeles Rams continue to shrink the 90-man summer roster to a 53-man limit, but it's not the end for many players.16 of the 37 waived players will have the chance to return to the practice squad.

A practice squad spot isn't to be discounted. The Rams often recruit those players first to address mid-season injuries. Some practice-squaders are signed to the active roster; free agents then fill their vacated slots to compete for similar promotions.

Of course, some teams view the practice squad as an afterthought. Rams general manager Les Snead views it as an opportunity to retain developmental players, augment the active roster, and as a laboratory to mix and match candidates for larger future roles.

For example, running back Ronnie Rivers began 2025 on the practice squad before being signed to the active roster in November. He's back on the 53 this season as well.

Post-signing analysis

Because no one the Rams let go during roster cutdowns was claimed off waivers, they effectively got to have their cake and eat it, too. Returning to the practice squad are preseason stars Cam Lampkin, Dean Connors, and Nick Andersen.

They kept both Keenan, a rookie seventh-round pick, and Norton, who impressed with his unique size and length in the preseason. Murchison, a sixth-year veteran who earned a 53-man roster spot last season and has appeared in 34 games for the Rams since 2022, is also back.

If there is a surprise here, it's that cornerback Al'zillion Hamilton wasn't re-signed as well. It's interesting to see linebacker Nikhai Hill-Green, a one-time popular dark-horse pick for the 53-man roster, left off. But given that, at the same position, Neal has spent several years in the organization and appeared in eight games, that's not really a surprise.

Overall, Rams fans should be pretty thrilled with the 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad that Snead, head coach Sean McVay, and the LA front office have assembled.
