Rams fans still waiting on practice-squad clarity in wake of potential signing

Los Angeles Rams fans are still awaiting a resolution following Tuesday's news that former Seahawks linebacker Jamie Sheriff planned to join LA's practice squad. Sheriff was waived by Seattle, but the Rams have yet to confirm his signing or indicate a corresponding move. 

The practice squad is currently full at 16 players. Punter Jake Bouwmeester is the 17th as an International Pathways exemption. 

Delays between reported moves and an official team announcement are routine. In this case, though, the wording of the initial report leaves room to question what, if anything, is actually going on.

Seahawks beat reporter Brady Henderson reported yesterday afternoon that Sheriff "plans to sign with the Rams' practice squad," according to a source. Typically, "plans" isn't part of the wording, or if it is, there are usually other reports backing up the initial announcement. Usually, the report simply states that said team is signing X player, or vice versa. Per sources. 

The statement on Sheriff reads awkwardly, as if the Rams were not a deciding party. It could simply be an odd turn of phrase, and it's probably prudent not to overanalyze. Still, as we wait on an update, now over 24 hours after the fact, it feels like the transaction may have hit a snag along the way.

Is Sheriff actually joining the team? Who would be released to make room? No, the move won't impact the season in any material way, but it would be nice to know. 

Sheriff spent last season on Seattle's own practice squad and appeared in one game, the third of his career. In two seasons between the Seahawks and Panthers, who signed Sheriff as an undrafted free agent in 2024, the edge rusher logged 51 total snaps between defense and special teams. 

Edge rusher is not a position of need for the Rams, which would make Sheriff an interesting addition. Los Angeles usually carries four edge defenders on the roster, but this year's initial 53-man unit includes five counting preseason star Wesley Bailey. Darryl Peterson III provides additional depth from the practice squad. 

Of course, it's possible that Sheriff's arrival would not require releasing anyone immediately. Granted a two-week roster exemption for Aaron Donald, the Rams could conceivably elevate a practice-squader and fill the vacant spot with Sheriff.

Or, they could add Sheriff directly to the 53-man roster. By the conclusion of Week 2 at the latest, when the exemption expires, LA would need to part ways with someone barring injury or suspension past that point.
