It's the heart of summer, which means the Los Angeles Rams will soon fire up training camp. Challenges remain, however, for general manager Les Snead. At some point, he must extend some of the two dozen or so contributors on expiring contracts.
Of course, the whole holdup could stem from what the team plans to do about superstar receiver Puka Nacua. He has proven to be consistently elite, a perfect fit for the complex but prolific Rams offense. But his off-field decisions have created questions about his maturity. NFL insider Mike Garafolo warned that LA was in no hurry to extend Nacua months ago.
And so far, he's absolutely right.
When Nacua's off-field struggles surfaced, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay did not mince words. While expressing his hope that Nacua would remain in Los Angeles for years to come, McVay also emphasized the need to uphold team standards both on and off the field.
More money means more responsibility for Puka Nacua
The Rams will extend Nacua at some point. But investing that much money into one player comes with risks. And there is no way Los Angeles is willing to put itself on the hook when Nacua has failed to demonstrate self-discipline whenever he steps off the football field.
As the Rams stall, the meter keeps running. The delay could be quite costly. But rushing to sign a contract before the young phenom proves he has the maturity to handle the pressure of stardom could be even more disastrous.
Nacua does not depend on gimmicks or blazing speed. What separates him is his toughness, passion, and determination. He has proven his dominance time and again against the stingiest secondaries in the NFL. The question is not if LA will extend him, but when.
As the Horns seek to overthrow the Seattle Seahawks as NFC West champions, Nacua will be a vital component of their efforts. He plays his best against the Seahawks, and there is no reason to expect less in 2026.
Nacua's extension could be the first of many dominoes to fall in terms of Rams extensions this year. When will it happen? Don't hold your breath. Waiting to ink the deal may cost the team millions, but the Rams can't afford to get it wrong.
As always, thanks for reading.
