Rams' updated draft picks after paying king's ransom in Myles Garrett trade

LA's latest blockbuster reaches all the way into the 2029 NFL Draft.

To all the skeptics who have harassed the Los Angeles Rams and general manager Les Snead for drafting Ty Simpson, hit the pause button for just a moment. Ire seemingly sprang up from all sides. One of the key complaints was that a team going all-in couldn't divert a Round 1 draft pick to select a future franchise quarterback.

Oh, really?

A word to the wise: it's foolish to judge Snead's work until pencils are down. After trading for All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, the riverboat gambler continued to roll the dice by adding 2025 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.

The price wasn't cheap. Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Rams sent out budding star Jared Verse plus a 2027 first-rounder, 2028 second-rounder, and 2029 third-round draft pick. Here's how the trade shakes out:

The trade not only sets up Los Angeles to be true contenders in 2026, it also depletes the team's ability to restock the roster in the immediate future. With the Rams agreeing to bring back Mathew Stafford for 2026 and what appears to be at least another season afterward, Snead got the green light to win, and win now.

Outlook for Rams draft picks through 2029

After reloading the defense for 2026, the Rams' future draft picks have been significantly exhausted. Los Angeles is now looking at just four selections in the 2027 draft. That's not much for a class expected to be loaded with talent.

Rams 2027 draft picks:

After trading their first, third, and seventh-round picks in '27, the Horns face a difficult test in restocking a roster facing the expiration of 25 player contracts.

What's to say? Snead loves a challenge.

Rams 2028 draft picks:

  • Round 1
  • * Round 2 - Traded for Garrett
  • Round 3
  • Round 4
  • Round 5
  • Round 6
  • Round 7 (via Cleveland Browns for offensive tackle K.T. Leveston)
  • Round 7

Even with seven picks in 2028, Los Angeles will miss that second-rounder. Hopefully, Snead has not forgotten how to dig up Day 3 diamonds.

Rams 2029 draft picks:

  • Round 1
  • Round 2
  • * Round 3 - Traded for Garrett
  • Round 4
  • Round 5
  • Round 6
  • Round 7

The latest blockbuster trade reaches all the way into the 2029 NFL Draft. Fortunately, Garrett is contracted through 2030. Los Angeles is familiar with cutting huge checks to defensive stars. Franchise legend Aaron Donald consistently ranked among the highest-paid players in the NFL.

The Rams have a clear Super Bowl window in 2026 and 2027 - for however long Matthew Stafford is standing in the pocket. That time frame will almost certainly dictate the strategy for handing out extensions at season's end. In a long line of pending free agents Snead would love to keep, he will have to pick and choose according to which players best suit the organization's two-year timeline.

As always, thanks for reading.
