Reeling Rams defense can't afford to underestimate Jaxson Dart and the Giants

The Los Angeles Rams won't get much relief from the schedule in Week 2. The New York Giants just served up the same smothering type of victory over the Cowboys that the 49ers handed to the Horns. Was it an upset, or are the Giants simply that good?

Ah, it's Week 1 in the NFL.

Sunday Night Football was worth watching. The 28-20 final score was not the only story. The G-Men must have used preseason hype over the Cowboys' formidable roster for motivation. What an upset.

While 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy picked apart the Rams, the Giants' Jaxson Dart dominated the Cowboys secondary in similar fashion, completing 23-of-29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns. He was cooly efficient en route to averaging an impressive 0.73 EPA per play, wasting little energy in leading his offense to a touchdown in every quarter.

And now the LA defense, which is already reeling, must step up and stop him in Week 2.

Rams defense won't be overconfident vs Giants in Week 2

Whatever exposed the Rams so badly, those factors have been scrubbed for Week 2. They are no longer anointed as default winners. The roster is no longer seen as bursting with insurmountable superstars, many of whom either struggled in the season opener, are injured entering Week 2 (i.e., Myles Garrett),or both.

Still, the NFL is known for wacky Week 1 results. The league has a way of turning expectations into surprises when real football finally gets going. The test will be upon coaches to either get their players better prepared for the next game or risk the humiliation of an early-season losing streak.

While the Horns defense was overwhelmed in Week 1, the group is not without playmakers. Cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson were not the problem against the 49ers. And after struggling, you can bet that communication among defensive backs will take on a fresh priority in this week's practice.

Better yet, Aaron Donald could make his debut. His leadership and presence is exactly what this defense needs.

But if you expected an easy win in Week 2, think again. The Giants just handed a very good Cowboys team a humiliating loss. It's no stretch of the imagination whatsoever to envision their early success extending to a two-game winning streak, at the Rams' expense.
