Scorching NFL rumors point to June 1st as date for Rams to reunite with star

The time has come. Now it's not a matter of when, but where.

Fans of the Los Angeles Rams around the world know that June 1, 2025, may mean nothing in terms of adding reinforcements. But on the other hand, June 1st could hold the potential to level up the Rams' roster. So in a way, it could mean just about everything. And the anticipation over which direction the team's destiny will take is exhilarating.

A tidal wave of NFL rumors points out the Rams as one of the teams that appear to be very much in the market for Miami Dolphins defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Yes, he is the same Jalen Ramsey that the team traded to the Dolphins in 2023. Well, now it's the Dolphins who are shopping him. And it's also the Rams who are very much in the hunt to reunite the former secondary star.

Of course, the team is not the only landing spot for Ramsey trade rumors. The Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders are reportedly in the hunt as well.

So, how can this be? How can the same team that traded Ramsey away in 2023 now have changed their minds in 2025? Ah, make it make sense. Well, we can help with that.

Distance makes the heart grow fonder

If you recall the status of the Rams football team after the 2022 NFL season, the outlook was pretty dim. The Rams had just completed a 5-12 season, the worst record in the history of a Sean McVay-led team. The team was broke, pushing an incredible amount of dead cap space that limited the team's ability to invest in free agents. And a pattern of trading away draft picks for players had saturated the market.

The combination of multiple forces persuaded the team to undertake a soft reboot. As a result, the team shed nearly all highly-paid veterans not named Aaron Donald, Matthew Stafford, or Cooper Kupp. Today, only Stafford remains from that purge.

All-pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey was not as fortunate. The Rams decided to trade Ramsey in 2023 to the Miami Dolphins. In return, the Rams received TE Hunter Long and a Round 3 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. That pick translated into Tennessee rookie outside linebacker Byron Young.

Ironically, it was Young and others who paved the way back to Jalen Ramsey. The Rams' young but energetic defense helped the Rams back to a 10-7 record in 2023. And even more young defensive stars helped the team to a record of 10-7 in 2024. Still, the team has not been able to find a true replacement for Ramsey.

Rams ready for Ramsey

Now, in 2025, the Rams have reclaimed their past reputation as a team that nobody wants to face. With a rapidly effective pass rush, a series of new innovations at the ready on offense, and a retooled special teams, the Rams appear to be a contender for Super Bowl LX. But this team did not address the secondary. In fact the team did not draft nor sign a new free agent cornerback. The only move made by the team is to extend CB Ahkello Witherspoon.

And then there is the fact that Rams HC Sean McVay confirmed the team was engaged in trade talks for Jalen Ramsey. That never happens.

I don't think that the Rams are painted into a corner right now. After all, the same Rams secondary averaged allowing just 114 passing yards per game in the 2025 NFL Playoffs. That is two games, one for Minnesota VIkings quarterback Sam Darnold (163 yards), and one for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (65 yards).

228 total passing yards in two playoff games.

So no. Don't believe the claims that this defense stinks. Nor take any claim that the Rams secondary is the week link of this team. The Rams pass defense was tops in the postseason, by a large margin.

But we are talking about the Super Bowl. The Rams know that Super Bowl rosters are willing to add talent even to positions of strength. The Rams pass rush was solid in 2021. But the team traded for elite veteran OLB Von Miller anyway. The Rams receiver room was solid as well. But the team signed free agent WR Odell Beckham Jr. anyway. Days later, WR Robert Wood fell to injury. The Rams had OBJ to take up the slack.

So it's not a matter of need. It's a matter of packing to climb the NFL's Mount Everest. Packing for an epic journey is about taking more than you need, just in case.

Will the Rams pull the trigger to acquire DB Jalen Ramsey? I'm good either way. But there is no denying that adding Ramsey to the Rams secondary changes this team's upside. He may have lost a step, but the Rams have managed to stockpile some very opportunistic defensive backs since his last tour of duty here.

I suppose that we won't have to wait very long to find out which team will trade for Jalen Ramsey. Don't be surprised if Ramsey returns. The Rams like him, and he likes the Rams. In the end, that is what it all comes down to.
