The way this season went, you'd have to believe Matthew Stafford has another year left in the tank. He even said he believed as much after the L.A. Rams were eliminated from the NFC Divisional Round last weekend.
Most fans would agree, too. Stafford looks like he's got plenty left to offer. But, his future with the Rams, and in the NFL in general, remains up in the air.
Thursday, head coach Sean McVay commented on Stafford's future and essentially told his quarterback what he'd like to see and know out of him in the coming days.
McVay didn't sound too crazy about having to wait a whiile in order to find out whether or not Stafford plans on playing in 2025.
“We don’t want to have that go on again. I don’t think that’s good for anybody. I think sooner than later, being able to get that clarity.
"Understanding clear, open and honest communication. I think there’s a lot of love coming from our part. I think there’s a lot of appreciation coming from his part as well. And I think a lot sooner than later is an ideal scenario.”
When will the Rams know Matthew Stafford's decision on his future?
Just how soon is McVay thinking he needs an answer from Stafford by? There really was no clarification in terms of a timeline, which makes sense since the team just began their offseason this week.
However, McVay did note that they would chat about this at the "appropriate time," whenever that happens to be.
More Rams news:
So, when will fans know if Stafford is returning? At the moment, that's not a question that can be answered. But, hopefully, that answer comes with enough time ahead of the new league year which begins on March 12.
It is at that time teams can officially agree to contracts with free agents. But, there will be a period before the new league year that sees some teams engage in trade talks. So, if Stafford isn't planning on coming back, then the Rams may want to get in on those conversations with, say, Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons.
There is hope Stafford comes back for another year, especially because of how well the Rams did this year when everyone was healthy. But, we'll have to wait and see what he decides to ultimately do.
Stafford isn't the only notable Rams player with an uncertain future, either. Wide receiver Cooper Kupp very well could be on the way out via trade, as those rumors still haven't died down dating back to last year's deadline.
Will the Rams have Stafford and Kupp back together for one more run?
