Stetson Bennett may have been the reason Rams hired co-offensive coordinator

He joined the Rams to coach up Stetson Bennett. He was promoted to wash, rinse, and repeat the process. Perhaps for new quarterback additions.

The Los Angeles Rams have made some significant personnel moves to restock the formidable coaching staff. But one of the most vital roles may have slipped under the radar for most fans. Along with the promotion of Nate Scheelhaase to offensive coordinator, the team promoted quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone to a co-offensive coordinator role.

That's huge and wise. Perhaps you need some background information to fully appreciate Ragone's new role. Well, stay tuned. You may enjoy the newly promoted coach.

Nothing tells the story of what this team plans to do as clearly as new coaching hires. The team has invested in offensive strategists, defensive secondaries, and special teams in the majority of new coaching hires. And the team understands that the value of any draft is the value-added that vital coaches add to rookies during training camp.

And so, the Rams' investment in key coaches could arguably be added to expectations for a successful draft.

Dave Ragone such an inspired promotion in Rams coaching staff?

Dave Ragone was hired in 2024 to coach up struggling quarterback Stetson Bennett. As you may recall, Bennett struggled as the preseason wore on in 2023 and ultimately walked away from the game due to burnout. Ragone was the team's immediate response, a quarterback whisperer who was earmarked to work with Bennett and restore him to a path of unlocking his full football potential.

Mission accomplished.

But to truly appreciate the value of Ragone's promotion, let's size up what we know about the team's changes to the coaching staff.

Offense

  • Offensive coordinator - Nate Scheelhaase (promotion)
  • Co-offensive coordinator - Dave Ragone (promotion)
  • Offensive coaching assistant - Brian Allen (offensive line)
  • Offensive coach - Kliff Kingsbury (offensive coordinator)

Defense

  • Defensive Assistant - Nate Wright (linebackers)
  • Defensive position coach - Michael Hunter (defensive backs)

Special teams

  • Special teams coordinator - Bubba Ventrone
  • Special teams assistant - Kyle Hoke

It would be a safe bet to expect Dave Rogone's quarterback coaching role to take on added importance in 2026. Either the team is planning to start an inexperienced quarterback this season (unlikely), or the team is planning to increase the number of inexperienced quarterbacks on the roster.

Ironically, Dave Ragone was so successful with restoring Stetson Bennett that he is now the co-offensive coordinator. That certainly wasn't on any fans' bingo cards.

The LA Rams just dropped a trail of breadcrumbs for observant fans. Let's see where the trail leads.

As always, thanks for reading.
