Los Angeles Rams star quarterback Matthew Stafford and the entire team fell short of their ultimate goal of being the last team standing. However, they didn't go down without a fight in a tightly contested 31-27 NFC Championship Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Falling to the Seahawks with a trip to Super Bowl LX on the line left typically talkative Rams head coach Sean McVay speechless. It also opened up a Pandora's box of questions heading into a critical offseason. Atop the list of concerns is whether Stafford, who turns 38 in February, will return in 2026, which comes down to desire, or lack thereof.
Despite his age, Stafford has shown few signs of slowing down. Heck, you could even argue he's improved in the late stages of what's been a remarkable 17-year NFL career (to date). By the sound of it, FOX Sports' lead analyst/Las Vegas Raiders minority owner/football icon Tom Brady would agree.
Tom Brady sings Matthew Stafford's praises in Rams' crushing NFC Championship Game loss to Seahawks
Stafford's Rams may no longer be in contention for this year's Lombardi Trophy. It's an unfortunate ending to an overall successful 2025 campaign. However, Brady reminded the Los Angeles faithful that its signal-caller remains in the running — and pole position — for another piece of hardware: MVP.
"What an MVP performance today by Matthew Stafford ... just in total command," - Tom Brady said on the broadcast.
It's hard to disagree with Brady. Stafford was surgical against the Seahawks and did everything he could to keep pace with their explosive offense. Performances like this are why the latter is the odds-on favorite to take home the league's most prestigious individual honor.
While Stafford's outstanding efforts didn't result in a victory, he delivered a historic performance when the Rams needed him most. The 2009 No. 1 overall pick was nothing short of spectacular, completing 22 of 35 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns. Brady, a three-time MVP himself, couldn't help but notice.
If Stafford had to pick between winning a second ring and a first MVP, he'd take the first option 10 out of 10 times. Nevertheless, his remarkable season deserves recognition, and we may have seen him put the finishing touches on securing the latter of awards.
