Ty Simpson has finally given the Rams a future they can count on

In 2025, the Los Angeles Rams' quarterback room featured Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, and veteran reserve Stetson Bennett. But only Bennett was under contract through 2026. And Stafford's back injury hinted at a need for a succession plan sooner rather than later.

Now the team has moved on from Jimmy G. The draft brought Ty Simpson. Afterward, the Rams signed Matt Caldwell out of Texas. Bennett is potentially in line to be QB2 this season. LA has found its future franchise QB in Simpson, and former critics are warming up to him rapidly.

Simpson's selection the draft may or may not have aligned with fan expectations. It certainly did not align with expectations from many analysts. General manager Les Snead does not care. He had one shot, one silver bullet first-round draft pick, to address the quarterback position.

Skeptics immediately disapproved of his choice. But, by jove, they now think he's nailed it.

Rams' quarterback solution is better than any expected

The current situation represents a significant change. Head coach Sean McVay hadn't enjoyed much young quarterback talent on the bench since he arrived in 2017. Whereas before he had John Wolford, Brett Rypien, and other journeymen veterans unlikely to make a future impact, the 2026 Rams have optimism and fresh talent in Simpson, Bennett, and Caldwell.

Let's be clear. Preseason is only Step 1 to Simpson's lengthy journey as an NFL quarterback. The Rams know that he'll have to overcome many challenges along the way. Still, the evidence is conclusive. Los Angeles no longer has a quarterback crisis.

That is great news indeed. Even as the Rams lean heavily on veterans, they have quietly accumulated promising talent behind them.

Simpson may be the focal point, but Snead has surrounded him with prospects like tackle Keagen Trost, receiver CJ Daniels, tight ends Max Klare and Terrance Ferguson, and even running backs Dean Connors and Jordan Waters, who are lodged on the practice squad.

2026 is an all-in season for the Horns. It's also a segue from the chapter that began in 2021 with Stafford's arrival. Whether Stafford plays after 2026 no longer matters quite so much. This season may be many Rams veterans' last hurrah together before expiring contracts and LA's pinched payroll force them to seek their fortunes elsewhere.

Young players wait patiently in the wings to write their own chapter in Rams history. In Simpson, they have the right quarterback to make it a chapter worth reading.
