Eric Dickerson recently suggested the Los Angeles Rams would be better off starting Sean Mannion over Jared Goff at quarterback this season.

When it comes to the Los Angeles Rams in the final days heading into training camp, one of the biggest topics of discussion has been the recent comments made by Eric Dickerson over who should start at quarterback. The former Rams running back recently made the suggestion that Sean Mannion, not Jared Goff, should be the starter at quarterback heading into Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts.

More from Ramblin' Fan

Nothing against Dickerson since he deserves to speak his opinion just like every other sports fan, but a decision by Sean McVay to roll with Mannion at quarterback would only delay the development process of Goff hopefully becoming the franchise quarterback Los Angeles needs him to be. Obviously, disastrous doesn’t even begin to describe how the former California’s first season in the league turned out, but keep in mind the struggles weren’t entirely Goff’s fault.

For starters, it’s going to be tough for any quarterback to find success when players like Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt are considered the top receivers to work with, which was the case for Goff in the seven games started as a rookie. Britt may no longer be in the picture after joining the Cleveland Browns during free agency, but the Rams have high hopes for Austin turning things around now he’s in a much better offense under McVay.

Not to mention, Los Angeles took advantage of having other key playmakers for Goff to work with in Robert Woods (free agency) and Cooper Kupp (NFL Draft). With all of this taken into consideration, fans will hopefully see major development in Goff’s progress when compared to his rookie year over the next few weeks to eliminate any worries heading into his sophomore season.

It would be one thing if the Rams were in a serious position to compete at the moment, and Mannion was an experienced quarterback who was capable of leading them into the postseason, but that’s far from the case. The fact that Mannion has only appeared in two games during the regular season since joining the league in 2015, and has yet to throw a single touchdown pass shows he would be better off remaining as a backup to Goff instead of the other way around.
