Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley was on the sidelines Saturday night against the Chargers. He didn’t dress, and what is most odd, if not downright discouraging, is it flies in the face of what Sean McVay had indicated two weeks ago about getting his running back more reps this preseason.

Fans should recall last year where then head coach Jeff Fisher kept him out of all four exhibition games. Fans should also recall that Gurley had an absolutely awful 2016 season, in what Rams GM Les Snead called a “sophomore slump.” Thus far, he’s had 12 carries this 40 yards.

Granted, he’s had 12/40 better than last exhibition season, but will that be enough to get him ramped up for 2017?

Let’s hope so.

One thing to consider, and that is this isn’t a Fisher team, and all should be grateful for that fact alone. But the idea that Gurley will be able to get going and keep going in still something of a mystery. And right now, like quarterback Jared Goff, the sample size seems pretty small to project better times ahead for the former Offensive Rookie Of The Year.

Fingers crossed McVay is right on this one.
