Reason I – Rams need veteran LBs

The Los Angeles Rams risk losing 75 percent of the teams starting linebacking corps to free agency this off-season. In rote numbers, that means three of four starters may be gone in 2020. That’s a huge change of Rams veterans at the linebacker position.

The Rams just had a season of placing rookies side by side as starters in 2019, and the offensive line suffered terribly as a result. While that was a lesson learned, it was a lesson worth avoiding into the future.

Nobody within the Rams organization projects OLB Alec Ogletree as the solution to the Rams’ needs at linebacker. But he is a versatile linebacker solution for the team until rookies or younger players can outplay him at practice and earn starting minutes. As the roster currently stands, only veteran linebacker Clay Matthews is returning to the team next season.

The Rams are not without linebacker talent. The team landed former Ravens linebacker Kenny Young who arrived in the trade that sent cornerback Marcus Peters to Baltimore. And the Rams lost inside linebacker Micah Kiser to an untimely injury before the 2019 season began, an injury which cost Kiser the season. He was the projected 2019 starting inside linebacker, a role he will no doubt reprise upon his healthy return to the team in 2020.
