LA Rams’ game-day pits the 5-2 Rams against the 3-3 Miami Dolphins, featuring the NFL debut of  rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa

The LA Rams have won five games this season, all against teams from the NFC. Their two losses have come at the hands of the Buffalo Bills of the AFC East and the San Francisco 49ers. This week, the LA Rams travel to take on another AFC East team in the Miami Dolphins.  This will be the Rams’ fourth trip to the East Coast, and fifth road trip, in just eight games.

The weekend weather is currently forecast to be rather hot (seasonably warm) and cloudy with rapidly building clouds. After a daytime high in the mid to upper 80’s on Saturday, the temperature will descend no more than to the upper 70’s.  Humidity and temperatures will increase back to the mid-80s on Sunday, with a 50/50 chance of thunderstorms by game time. Winds will be slightly gusty from the ENE from 5-10 MPH.

Unpredictable game?

The LA Rams face a rookie quarterback for the first time this season as the Dolphins send out their star rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.  For the first six games, the Dolphins have gone with hot-handed veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick.  But that role was never more than a proxy passer, as the Dolphins worked hard to clear Tagovailoa medically, physically, and mentally for the NFL. While they’ve prepared him as well as they can, no one can be fully prepared to face this LA Rams defense.  The Rams are the NFL’s number two defense in allowing just 17.7 points-per-game

Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins face a battle-tested Rams’ offense, a team that has moved the ball well but needs to improve their red-zone performance.  While the Rams have moved the ball better than the Dolphins, it’s the Dolphins offense that has put up 1.6 points more per game.  Now, the Rams must focus upon putting points up early and often to keep the pressure on the Dolphins rookie QB.

Is Miami rookie Tua Tagovailoa ready to play?

While the Miami Dolphins have certainly gotten a lot of valuable production out of veteran QB Fitzpatrick, this season was always about Tua Tagovailoa.  While there is no doubt that Tagovailoa has talent, will he be able to deliver against a formidable defense in his first outing? The Dolphins will no doubt try to run an offense that suits his style, which will include simple route trees, plenty of bootlegs, and high percentage passes.

The problem with that strategy is that the Rams have witnessed it already against the San Francisco 49ers, and had adapted to throttle that sort of strategy in the second half of that game.  And in the process, the Rams hopefully learned that they can use both a run and pass offensive strategy to win games against stout defenses, which they did against the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.
