As LA Rams celebrate Stafford, Goff Wentz must reboot careers
By Bret Stuter
Can’t stop the inevitable comparisons
But what the Rams head coach does not say in words, he says with the contrast of his former quarterback Jared Goff. As McVay touts what he gets in Stafford, the obvious questions form in the back of the viewers’ minds. ‘Didn’t Jared Goff give that?”. The short answer? No.
The LA Rams drafted Jared Goff first in the 2016 NFL Draft, and then watched the Philadelphia Eagles draft Carson Wentz. The LA Rams watched Carson Wentz lead the Eagles to the doorstep of the NFL Playoffs and then watched backup quarterback Nick Foles win it for them.
The LA Rams watched as the Eagles struggled with inconsistent play with Wentz, drafted a backup quarterback, and watched some more as the Eagles team collapsed under the weight of high expectations. Reports from Philadelphia Eagles beat writers were that Carson Wentz couldn’t read defensive coverages.
The experiences, events, and now the words of head coach Sean McVay suggest that Jared Goff not only struggles at reading his progressions but that he has hit his ceiling at doing so.
First Carson Wentz and now Jared Goff? What gives?
For now, it’s no longer the Rams nor the Eagles’ problems. The Rams traded for a veteran. The Eagles turned the keys over to a second-year quarterback. And now the burden for Jared Goff and for Carson Wentz falls to the Detroit Lions and the Indianapolis Colts.
