Brian Baldinger's take on Ty Simpson to Rams is one you'll tell your coworkers

Wait. Did Brian Baldinger really just say that?

Brian Baldinger is one of the most astute and colorful NFL analysts in the business. As the host of Baldy's Breakdowns, he often breaks down unmistakably superb performances that are often missed by fans. But Baldy knows football, so he knows what to look for and what entertains fans. That expertise could not come at a better time for the shaken confidence of Rams fans

After getting clobbered on social media, not even the resounding support of trusted NFL experts could turn fans' opinions from disappointment over the team selecting quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick. But perhaps Brian Baldinger can change all of that.

After all, nobody spells it out as poetically as Baldy:

If you believe what Baldy sees, the quarterback role that Ty Simpson now finds himself in is a custom-fitting, $10,000 suit. The knock on Simpson is the lack of experience. Well, he will have a year to train with the LA Rams. Sure, he will need to step up and play at some point in time. But he is not expected to see the football field until 2027, or even 2028, at the earliest.

This is Stafford's team, but it's Simpson's future

It was clear from head coach Sean McVay, whose team is in fervent negotiations to get its starting quarterback back for training camp, that this is Matthew Stafford's team in 2026. Still, Stafford showed his age with a back injury last season that prevented him from participating in any football-related activities until days before the season started.

Like it or not, LA dodged disaster last season by the width of an insect's leg. That near-calamity served its purpose as a wake-up call for general manager Les Snead. After ignoring the need for a successor to Matthew Stafford for years, he had had enough. And he landed the perfect prospect for the Horns.

You can take Brian Baldinger's word for it.

Have fans forgotten that this coaching staff has been built for an opportunity like this? And quarterback whisperer Dave Ragone was promoted to co-offensive coordinator. As controversial as some fans and websites are trying to spin LA's attraction to Simpson, the clues were laid out weeks ago.

No teacher succeeds without pupils. No coach succeeds without players. This team has been laying the foundation for this moment, this selection. NFL draft analysts judge the upside of rookie prospects from an objective assessment of the average team.

But none can predict how a superb quarterback with excellent improvisational and processing skills, with little experience, will work out when added to a system designed to coach him up for months. As Baldy put it:

"Ty Simpson went to football heaven."

Just pause for a moment. Would rookie running back Jeremiyah Love (had he been on the board) have been instantly inserted into this offense? Or would he have to wait his turn behind Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, and perhaps even Jarquez Hunter?

The same is true for any rookie wide receiver. Despite the draft and off-season hoopla that would follow, they would have little impact on this offense in 2026.

By adding Simpson, the team acknowledged its own past practices and is leaning into them.

If Baldy is on board, fans should be too.

As always, thanks for reading.
