The Los Angeles Rams did exactly what everyone thought they would. General manager Les Snead converted the Round 1 pick bartered from the Atlanta Falcons in 2025 into a future franchise rookie quarterback prospect out of Alabama, Ty Simpson. And yet, fans and NFL draft analysts have given him a bitterly cold shoulder, even though he fills a huge need, and he has yet to throw a football in Horns.
So what are those disgruntled fans and draft analysts missing? In a word, plenty. The knock on Simpson was his lack of collegiate experience. He checks all the boxes NFL teams want to see from a rookie who is earmarked for the pocket. Such as:

Elite arm talent, quick release, and he’s been developing behind real competition. McVay could mold him into something serious. High upside QB on a rookie deal = EXACTLY how you stay competitive.

Selecting a less-experienced rookie quarterback is a plus, not a negative, in Los Angeles. The Horns have one of the most quarterback-centric coaching staffs in the NFL. And the team added Coach Kliff Kingsbury to the mix this season. Talk about a coaching staff engineered to get the most from the quarterback position?
This is going to be good.
Les Snead proves he is still crazy, as a fox
The selection of Simpson has gotten protests from many fans and draft analysts for a wide range of reasons and factors. But the ultimate underlying reason for the protests is a lack of faith and trust.
They don't view Simpson as 'that guy.' They don't view the LA Rams coaching staff as capable of coaching up an NFL quarterback. And they don't agree with giving any first-round quarterback time on the bench to learn the offense before being expected to drive it instinctively.
But the experts disagree, vehemently:
"I am ready to fight anybody who says this wasn't one of the greatest decisions we've seen in recent memory."

Fans don't have to take anyone's word for it. They will have a chance to see for themselves at training camp. Despite the protests and social media vitriol, you can bet that fans will warm up to Ty Simpson instantly. He simply needs to showcase his stuff. And LA's fanbase knows how to appreciate a hard-working rookie.
San Francisco 49ers websites scoff at LA selecting Ty Simpson. The Seattle Seahawks website predicts disaster ahead. The Arizona Cardinals website was stunned, as it expected Arizona to draft Simpson. If NFC West Division rivals are chattering about Simpson, you know they are getting a bit nervous. And they should be.
The premise that drives many of the rivals' rude assessments has already been debunked. LA did not trade back from 13 because they had no offers to do so. The premise that had coach Sean McVay blindsided by Simpson's selection was completely false. The reality is that Los Angeles has an MVP quarterback, Matthew Stafford, in the pocket, and a true worthy successor when he hangs up his cleats.
Snead grabbed the consensus second-best quarterback in this rookie class. In 2027, as multiple teams jockey for position to draft their own future franchise quarterback, Snead can settle in and select from many top defensive prospects who fall as a result.
Some say Les Snead is crazy for selecting Ty Simpson. But wiser minds admit he is crazy, crazy like a fox.
As always, thanks for reading.
