It seems as though the LA Rams (5-6) traveling to take on the New Orleans Saints (4-7) should be the type of game that the Rams should win. And were this 2023, or any season of the past, that would likely be the case. But this is 2024, a season in which the team seems to get knocked down to the canvas, take a standing eight count, only to rise from the mat long enough to survive until the end of the round.
Some view the Rams' struggles as reason enough to blow up the roster and start over. But the LA Rams are not a team that has aged less than gracefully. Quite the opposite is true. Since the middle of 2022, the team has made an effort to refurbish the entire roster on the fly, starting with the edge rushers and backup running back position, and now encompassing all but a final few key positions needed to win an NFL Championship: A rookie franchise quarterback, an offensive tackles, and a shutdown cornerback.
The New Orleans Saints are no strangers to facing similar struggles. Much like the Rams (but without the epidemic of injuries), the Saints have long sought a successor to former quarterback Drew Brees with limited success. As a result, the team has been stuck in a whirlpool of changing head coaches (now on their third since Brees played for the team in 2020), and searching for a new identity. They have been too good to land a top pick in the NFL Draft, but not good enough to successfully appear in the NFL Playoffs.
Such is life after veteran quarterback Drew Brees.
The Rams managed to find a veteran after QB Jared Goff in Matthew Stafford. But now Goff has managed to lead the Detroit Lions (11-1) to the best record in franchise history. Were the Rams too hasty? Not when you consider the fact that the team recognized the limited amount of time left for All-Pro DT Aaron Donald and his helplessness and frustration after a Divisional Round loss in the 2021 NFL Playoffs on the road to the Green Bay Packers.
The team rallied around Donald, skyrocketing to win Super Bowl LVI on February 13, 2022, behind the crafty passing of veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford..
In Week 13 of the 2024 NFL season, the Rams and the Saints are no longer competing for a chance to represent the NFC in the NFL Championship Game. They are merely two teams fighting to reclaim a chance to compete in the postseason for the right to do so. And the game to determine which team inches closer to that goal falls right after Thanksgiving Day, one of the busiest days for retail shopping in the nation.
