The Los Angeles Rams are not mathematically eliminated from the playoff race by any means. But at 2-4, this is a team clinging desperately to the hopes of a wild-card berth. And those are simply not easy to come by when you lose two out of every three games.
Yes, the 2024 Rams fell to 1-4 before a dramatic turnaround where they won nine of their final 12 games. And LA made the playoffs by winning the NFC West Division outright. Right now, the San Francisco 49ers (6-0) have nearly clinched it after six games.
The Seattle Seahawks finished 10-7 in 2024. They did not earn a playoff seeding.
That's the Horns' fate right now. Even if they get hot, it could be all for naught. And should LA drop one more game? Well, things will get extremely complicated. Much like the 2022 Rams, this roster was built to win now. In the process, the team burned through draft picks to add current talent.
The lack of success and healthy bodies puts the Rams in a deficit. Not only are they lacking talent today, but they have exhausted the talent pipeline for tomorrow. And just like 2022, general manager Les Snead may view the need to rebuild as the greater priority.
To do that, he'll need to restock his draft cupboard by flipping veterans before the November 10 trade deadline.
2026 Rams could benefit from another roster purge
At the end of the 2022 season, LA was quick to trade away All-Pro defensive back Jalen Ramsey and wide receiver Allen Robinson. The draft picks returned in those trades became Byron Young and running back Zach Evans. While Evans did not make the roster, Young has proven to be a huge asset on the defense.
Right now, there will be no draft day consolation prize waiting if LA's season continues on its downward spiral. But the Rams were not swimming in 2022 draft picks, either. It was not until they decided to shed high-cost veterans that the draft became a realistic wellspring of fresh talent.
And right now, the Rams' 2027 draft needs a similar infusion if restocking the roster is to be realistic.
Rams' 2027 draft picks:
- Round 1: Traded to the Cleveland Browns for DE Myles Garrett
- Round 2
- Round 3: Traded to the Kansas City Chiefs for CB Trent McDuffie
- Round 4
- Round 5
- Round 6
- Round 7: Traded to the Baltimore Ravens with CB Tre White for a 2026 Round 7 pick
Who might go? Well, the roster has not benefited in the least from the addition of Myles Garrett. There is no way Los Angeles recoups its investment to even break even. But they could cut into the deficit by trading other players for assets.
Some continue to call on Snead to shop for help. It may not be that easy. If this team doesn't prove it can win, there is no reason to throw good money after bad investments. In fact, if the Rams fail to win its next game or two, look for them to become very willing in trade talks.
They cannot ignore the facts. While fans can admire the team for taking a chance at winning it all, the gamble simply did not pan out. And so, Snead and company may be forced to turn the page. Changes are coming. Now, it's merely a matter of when.
As always, thanks for reading.
