Bold Prediction V: LA Rams select a WR on Day 2
Since the LA Rams drafted wide receiver Cooper Kupp with the 69th overall pick in the 2017, the team has chosen five wide receivers, and has not 'hit' on any of them to date. But it is a position that the LA Rams love to add to, and with the recent trade of WR Allen Robinson, the team needs to add competition to the WR room
By hit, I am referring to finding a true WR2, a player who puts up 1000 receiving yards in any given season, a player who has the full confidence of the Rams coaching staff and the Rams front office. Of course, the Rams have enjoyed some talented young receivers. The team had WR Josh Reynolds, has WR Van Jefferson, Ben Skowronek, and even Tutu Atwell.
But when push comes to shove, the Rams front office has inevitably turned to the veteran free agency market to augment the Rams receiving corps, and has struggled to find the right fit there as well. The Rams have signed WR Robert Woods, WR DeSean Jackson, Odell Beckham Jr., and WR Allen Robinson. The team's front office has even traded for WR Brandin Cooks. Of the lot, only Woods and Cooks had truly panned out. Unfortunately, even they had been traded away. It's almost like the LA Rams are hungry for something, and keep raiding the fridge to try to satisfy that hunger unsuccessfully.
Rams can't resist a WR in this draft
We know how the story goes. The LA Rams fans are lobbying hard for the team to draft offensive linemen this year. If that doesn't happen, then the majority of fans (based on comments here and in forums) would love to see the team select defensive playmakers. And that may happen. But the Rams have three picks to spend on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft, and Round 3 appears to be quite full of the type of receivers that get Rams head coach Sean McVay quite excited.
We had covered some players in our Rams Top 50 Big Board article, an article that named some very intriguing rookies receivers like Tennessee wide receiver Jaylin Hyatt, as well as SMU's accomplished wide receiver Rashee Rice, and even Arizona WR Jacob Cowing, who checks all of those boxes as an ideal type of rookie who has turned the heads of many NFL scouts already.
Personally, I would rather the team invest in foundational players. Players who compete at the line of scrimmage, rush the passer, or break up pass plays. But the more I try, the more I surrender to the fact that the LA Rams will do what the LA Rams always do. This team will get Rams head coach Sean McVay some offensive weapons, who will likely be redshirted in 2023.
