If you have been following the viral messaging on social media regarding the Los Angeles Rams and the draft day demeanor of head coach Sean McVay, you likely hold the following three conclusions about the team and the value of selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick
- Sean McVay is furious that Les Snead went rogue and picked a quarterback without his buy-in
- McVay does not want Ty Simpson and was caught by surprise at his selection.
- The once lockstep duo of Les Snead and Sean McVay is irrevocably damaged, and as soon as Matthew Stafford retires, McVay is off to pursue a career in broadcasting with Amazon Prime

It was clear to all who saw Sean McVay after the Day 1 selections were in the history books that something was bothering him. But despite the update from Peter Schrager that McVay loved the pick, fans continued to fume.
It was not until NFL insider Ian Rapoport explained that McVay was fettered in his reactions to adding a rookie quarterback due to the ongoing negotiations with starting quarterback Matthew Stafford. McVay loves Stafford and went out of his way to ensure that he did not seem overly excited at the arrival of a future franchise quarterback.
Mission accomplished.
Rams draft is all about 2027 and beyond so far
What is Les Snead up to? Well, his strategy is forming the unmistakable pattern of drafting positional depth at every position where an aging veteran is playing. What do I mean?
- QB Matthew Stafford -> QB Ty Simpson
- TE Tyler Higbee -> TE Max Klare
- OT Rob Havenstein -> OT Keagan Trost
If this pattern continues to hold, other positions that may be addressed are offensive tackle (David Quessenberry, age 35), long snapper (Joe Cardona, age 34), wide receiver (Davante Adams, age 33), offensive center (Coleman Shelton, age 30), and nose tackle (Poona Ford, age 30).
Of course, with only four picks remaining, not all positions will offer up a viable fit when Los Angeles makes a selection, but if you need a template to anticipate which positions may be targeted, this is a fine legend for now.
Horrible misinformation circulated on social media. But what those off-the-cuff hot takes failed to consider is the fact that Les Snead and Sean McVay are more akin to brothers than co-workers. They will jump in instantly to defend the other, and that goes even in difficult roster decisions.
McVay is not stupid. Despite a lasting allegiance to Stafford, even he realizes that his team cannot prosper without a firm succession plan. Ty Simpson will write the next chapter of his team. That's music to new offensive coordinator Nate Scheelhaase's ears.
Hopefully, fans will follow Sean McVay's lead and warm up to their future quarterback. McVay already has.
As always, thanks for reading.
