In March, as teams began to ramp up for the 2018 NFL Draft, one player Ramblin’ Fan profiled was John Kelly from Tennessee. As fate would have it, Kelly was selected by the Rams in the sixth round.

While history has yet to be written, fans have to like what they have seen so far.

Let’s be honest, no one is saying that Kelly will dislodge Gurley, the OPOY anytime soon. But if you had to have a guy who looks to be able to step in at a moment’s notice and not give much up if anything, it’s this guy.

I know. It’s two games. Two preseason games no less, and no Hall of Fame credentials have been noted. But in an offseason and now preseason where two pressing matters have dominated with Donald not being in camp, and maybe no legitimate backup quarterback on the roster, Kelly is a terrific and needed story for the Rams.

One thing we now know, is he’ll push the top of the depth chart.

While Gurley is a lock as a starter, and deservedly so, Kelly is potentially a valuable backup for the franchise in a host of capacities.

He is a good one, and possibly a great one down the road.

But for now, he’s the lone bright spot for a Rams team who’s preseason has been hardly impressive.
