The 6-2 Los Angeles Rams appear to be trending in the right direction. Since losing to the 5-3 San Francisco 49ers in Week 5, the team has stitched together an impressive three-game winning streak. The team has bested the 3-5 Baltimore Ravens, the 5-3 Jacksonville Jaguars, and the 1-8 New Orleans Saints.
It's not the victories that raise eyebrows. Rather, it's the way the team has claimed those victories. The offense has scored 86 points over the past three games, while the defense has allowed just 20 points. Veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford has thrown for 644 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions over that period.
The pass rush has recorded 12 quarterback sacks over the three games.
But Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is wheeling and dealing at the NFL trade deadline. So, with an NFC contender so active at the trade deadline, how might Rams general manager Les Snead respond? That's a very good and timely question that puzzles many fans.
Les Snead will do what he does best, his own thing
Forget the pressure of keeping up with other NFL teams. Forget the outcries from fans to do something at the NFL trade deadline. Les Snead is his own man, and will keep his own counsel. He often does what nobody expects him to do. He tweaks the roster when NFL analysts expect bold transactions.
And he negotiates blockbuster trades when NFL analysts think major moves are all but impossible.
It's tough to argue that the team lacks the right roster to compete in the NFL playoffs. Despite losses to the 5-3 San Francisco 49ers and 6-2 Phildelaphia Eagles, Los Angeles certainly has valid arguments that they were screwed by bad officiating in both games. Even without suspect officiating, compelling arguments can be made that repeating those opponents will lead to differeing outcomes.
LA will have an opportunity to prove that point in a Week 10 rematch at the San Francisco 49ers. And that is but the second of six NFC West Division games to be played that will carry tremendous weight for the NFL playoff picture.
Controversy aside, Los Angeles is only one of two teams to defeat the 7-2 Indianapolis Colts. And it's only one of three teams to defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both AFC South Division teams are viewed as postseason contenders.
Will Les Snead be active at the NFL trade deadline? NFL rumors suggest so, simply from the number of rumors and the vast number of NFL insiders that are claiming the Rams to be shopping. To help readers navigate the options, there are positional priorities and specific players who could be targets at the deadline.
Ultimately, it takes two teams to agree to a trade. Sometimes a deal is dead in the water simply due to players not being up for sale. Other times, the deal dies because the price is set too high by the selling team. Snead may make deals, but he only makes them at a cost that he believes is fair.
And so, as the Eagles wheel and deal, the Rams stand on a bargain basement trade for promising young cornerback Roger McCreary. Is that enough? It's up to Les Snead. Ultimately, he won't try to match the number of trades made by other teams. He simply aims at upgrading the roster more effectively.
Rams GM Les Snead has done more with less than Eagles GM Howie Roseman. Fans can remain confident that it will remain the case. As always, thanks for reading.
